March 2024
It is now mid April and somehow I’ve fallen behind but I’m still dropping my March favorites anyways. March was a busy month and maybe I needed the extra days to recharge and think hard about my pics for this month.
I went to SXSW for the first time this year and it was a blast. Got to see a lot of acts in the span of 5 days. Made some new favorite artists along the way. Now let’s get into it!!!
Is It A Crime by Sade - Where are the real yearners at? Love music with a little desperation sprinkled in. Listening to Sade also just reminds me of home and listening to music with my mom and sisters.
Loud Bark by Mannequin Pussy - As I’ve stated previously Mannequin Pussy could fart into the mic and I would listen. I Got Heaven was one of my most anticipated albums of 2024 and it did not disappoint. Loud Bark by far is a stand out track for me. Missy even stated in an interview with Yasi Salek on Bandsplain that it is one of the best songs on the album. There’s a lot of anger in that song that I relate to.
Insecure Dreams by Birthday Girl - Birthday Girl came out with their ALbum In This Unassuming Little House Only Good Things Can Happen and we featured Desire in January Favorites so of course another song would be making an appearance.
Pop by Schoolboy Q - Listening to Schoolboy Q reminds me of being in high school. Pop has a Rico Nasty feature so I obviously I had to tune in.
Raining All the Time by Theo Bleak - I’m not even sure where I came across this song but I’m glad I did. Whenever it’s super chilly outside I find myself listening to songs with depressing lyrics. I like how this very much a pop song but listening to the lyrics tells a different story like with the song Nobody by Mitski. I’m dancing but still sad.
Long Distance Driver By Greg Freeman - I admit it I’m late to the Greg Freeman train friends have been telling me to listen for months and I put it on the backburner but… I finally got to see them in Texas and now I’m converted. I Looked Out is quite literally a perfect album.
Waste by Lily Seabird - Like with Greg Freeman I’m a little late to the party here but if you haven’t already you need to check out Alas, Lily Seabird’s latest album. So much talent coming out of Burlington, VT right now. If you’re a fan of Wednesday and MJ Lenderman definitely check out Lily Seabird and Greg Freeman.
Von Dutch (Remix) by Charli XCX - Loved the original but there’s something about the remix that scratches an itch in my brain.
Building A Bomb by Brutus VIII - Jackson has been a guest on the pod and makes really fun gothy new wave music and they’ve finally announced their latest album with this being the lead single.
Krillin by They are Gutting a Body of Water - There’s some really good music coming out of Philly and TAGABOW featured some of my favorite artists on this track. I was obsessed with Greg Mendez’ self titled album last year and saw SUN ORGAN open for TAGABOW about a year ago at Purgatory.
Milky Max by Lip Critic - Another album I’m really anticipating think its only a matter of time before Lip Critic blows up so get in early. Album drops 5/17.
Blood on the Reef by Torture and the Desert Spiders - I was sent this song and absolutely loved it. Their first single in a minute. I’m excited to see what else they release.
Jesse by Hazel English - I haven’t listened to Hazel English in a long time same with Day Wave and I love the way their voices blend together. Honestly I’m noticing this month is giving what February should have and I’m featuring a lot of songs about love.
Had Ya Called by Nourished by Time - First release since signing to XL Recordings earlier this year. Excited to see what the have coming in the future.
Jigsaw Falling Into Place by Radiohead - Sometimes Tiktok is good because you can rediscover songs that you used to love.
Will You Do Me A Kindness by Merce Lemon - We already know my current obsession is greg Freeman. Well this new single from Merce Lemon their first in 4 years cover art and music video were directed by Greg Freeman.
Windshield by jumper seat - 2 friends making music with one another. Been a fan of Tommy Oeffilng for a minute but just got into Crawling Vines because of this EP.
See by villagerrr - Saw them at SXSW which perfectly aligned with the release of their latest album. One of my faves off the record.
Embarrassed Dog by Chanel Beads - Preparing myself for the EP to drop this Friday
BBIDGI by The Army, The Navy - Their debut album! Amazing harmonies can definitely hear the heartbreak in this one.
Lakewood by Chatterton - Sometimes the best way to discover new music is through your social network / bands you love. MILLY opened for them on their album release show and I had to check out the album.
Movies / Shows
Anatomy of A Fall - Amazing incredible A Marriage story wishes they told a story this impactful.
Midnight Mass - First time watching this one. I like Mike Flanagan and recently watched The Fall of the House of Usher and loved the input of Edgar Allan Poe stories throughout where are my House of Amontillado fans at. This honestly may be my favorite of his besides The Haunting of Hill House. Loved seeing Zach Gilford otherwise known as Matt Saracen in this.
Gigs
Florry w/ Greg Freeman & Lily Seabird @ Baby’s All Right- You already know thanks to SXSW I’ve seen Greg Freeman 3 times this month it’s an insane obsession for me. Lily Seabird started out the night with a stripped down set that wasn’t with their full band . Like her album Alas, it was really beautiful to see it
live. I was talking to my Caroline and she pointed out how Waste has a completely different feel especially with the ending breakdown live. Feels a little bit more heartbreaking. Next up was Greg Freeman my first time seeing them and actually knowing the music and I think I like the live set more and more anytime I see it. I’m gonna be honest I only stayed for 2 of Florry’s songs because it was a late show and I was a little tired but what I did see was amazing. Really cool instrumentation going on.
